Paper hearts are not just for Valentine's Day! Here's a great idea for making geometric paper heart wall art to transform your plain walls any time of year. All you need are a few simple craft supplies to make this origami-style wall décor in a heart shape. This 3d effect geometric wall art would also make a great DIY gift for crafters or for Mother's Day!

There is nothing I love more than getting creative with my home décor. Few DIY projects are as easy to create and will have such an enormous effect on your wall space as this geometric paper heart wall art! Plus, it's an easy peasy project that doesn't take much time to make!

    Craft room wall art idea

It's been a while since I've posted an update on my multifunctional room makeover. The reason for the delay is that I've been held up with all sorts of delivery problems for the products I've sourced for the room. Rest assured, the full reveal will be coming in the not too distant future, and in the meantime, I'm sharing this wall décor craft project with you.

The 3d heart wall art I'm making today will be hanging in my multifunctional room and that's why I'm sticking to neutral colors to make the heart. I've used white paint for my contrasting color but, depending on your color scheme, you could use acrylic paint in different colors to create a different effect if you prefer.

I can imagine that this wall art would also look amazing in pretty pastel colors for spring!

By the way, just in case you came here looking for paper hearts, you can find my tutorial for making folded paper hearts, paper strip hearts, and DIY heart garlands here.

Before we jump into the full tutorial for this simple papercraft, here are the materials you will need on hand. You will probably already have most of the supplies for creating this DIY, making it an extremely affordable project to make with little extra cost.

Supplies for making geometric heart wall art
Supplies for making geometric heart wall art
    • A sheet of brown paper (58.5 x 77 cm / 23 x 30 inches)
    • Acrylic paint (I used white)
    • Large paintbrush
    • Card stock
    • Craft knife
    • Cutting mat
    • Heart template
    • Ruler
    • Pencil
    • Craft glue
    • Hot glue gun
    • Pair of scissors
    • Twine
    • Wooden slat/batten cut to 58.5 cm / 23 inches

Side note: It will be easier to use two-toned paper (white/brown), but if you can't find it, you can paint one side of the brown paper, white instead.

Geometric heart wall art – instructions

Step one – The first thing you need, is a piece of construction paper, card stock, or packing paper large enough to make your geometric heart wall art.

You don't need to follow my measurements if they are too large or small for your requirements heck, you could cover the entire wall if you wanted to. Just remember to adjust the size of the square templates to match the size of the wall art you will be creating.

TIP: You do not need any special kind of origami paper for this DIY wall art idea. Brown packing paper or craft paper on a roll will probably be the cheapest option for this project.

    Create two-tone paper

Step two – Using a large paintbrush, paint one side of the brown paper with white acrylic paint and allow it to dry. You may need to add a second layer of white paint for an opaque finish.

    Cut geometrical shapes

Step three – Now it's time to make templates that will help us measure the distance of the squares for your geometric heart. Using scissors, cut twenty-one squares from card stock to use as your templates.

Each square should measure 8.5 x 8.5 cm (roughly 3 x 3 inches). If you have a Cricut Maker, you could program it to cut the squares out for you whilst you are painting the brown paper.

Step four – With the white side facing upwards, lay the squares out on top of the paper as you can see in the photo below. Leave around 0.5 cm space between each square from top to bottom and from side to side.

Squares of paper set out in a pattern to make geometric heart wall art.

Step five – Create a geometrical pattern. Once you have the squares where you want them, use a pencil to draw a straight line around them creating a geometrical pattern. I used a strip of wood batten to hold the squares in place while I traced around them.

Step six – Using a paper cutting tool/craft knife, cut two sides of each square, following the template.

Step seven – Turn the paper over so that the brown side faces upward (not shown). Open up each of the triangles, by folding them backward and pressing along the fold with your finger or with a paper folding tool.

Making a hanger for DIY heart wall art

Step eight – The next step will be to make a hanger for your DIY heart wall art. Squeeze some craft glue or mod Podge along one side of one of the wooden battens.

Adding glue to a wooden batten to make a frame for geometric heart wall art.

Press the paper onto the wooden batten at the top of the heart. Repeat with the second wooden batten, placing it at the bottom of the heart.

Gluing the heart wall art to the wooden batten to make a hanger

TIP: I've used wooden battens to give my geometric heart wall art more stability. To make the wall art even more solid, you could glue it to a light wooden board, canvas frame, or an old picture frame instead. If you do this, remember to paint the wooden board or background surface with a contrasting color of your choice before adding your wall art.

Step nine – To finish off the hanger for this geometric paper heart wall art you to attach some twine. You will need a hot glue gun for this bit. The length of the twine that you use to make a hanger will depend on how low you want your wall art to hang on your wall. I cut my twine at around 88cm/34.5".

Make a knot at each end of the length of twine before gluing it to the outside edge of each side of the wooden batten.

Hanging geometric paper heart wall art

Step ten – The last step is to hang your gorgeous geometric paper heart wall art. How you hang your wall art will depend upon the type of interior walls you have.

The interior walls in our home are made from brick which means, I had to use a hammer to attach a small nail to the wall. This geometric paper heart wall art is very light which means that you don't need any heavy-duty picture hooks to hang it.

    Conclusion

This 3d geometric paper heart wall art really is an outstanding wall art idea and would make a great addition to your craft room, kid's room, or even your master bedroom! Using different colored paper is a great way of changing up the look and creating unique wall art pieces for your home.

There is no end to the amazing things you can create if you put your mind to it!

TIP: I'm working on a video tutorial for this project, which might make it easier for you to recreate. As soon as the video is ready, I'll add it to this post.
