Modern Rustic Christmas Hallway ideas
I seem to have a thing for stars this year, you will see them in every shape and size throughout my Christmas decorating.
I've decorated the windowsill above the wooden chest with big wooden stars.
The real star of the show is the natural rustic Christmas vignette. I created it using a wooden brick mould.
The mini Christmas tree is real, as is the springy green moss, purchased from our local garden centre. The 'tinsel' on the tree I've created from sprigs of pretty pink heather from the garden. Of course, I had to drape the tree with twinkle lights because a girl can never have too much twinkle, in my opinion!
A splendid black wooden stag, pine cones and sticks from the forest floor complete this modern rustic hallway windowsill vignette.
Modern rustic Christmas staircase
I've switched out the large grass wreath that is usually hanging above the stairs, for a beautiful homemade advent calendar. The grass wreath is now hanging on the wall next to the table in the kitchen.
DIY TIP 1: You can see my Paper bag Advent calendar tutorial here.
DIY TIP 2: See this tutorial for how to make a large grass wreath.
Our boys are in the twenties now but Advent calendars are such a big part of my Christmas decorating that I still put one up every year. Instead of adding sweets or chocolate, you could make family activity cards - the cards could have ideas for activities and outings throughout the year.
Advent Calendar
To make this year's Advent calendar, I've hung pretty paper bags from a metal triangle shape wreath base. To finish off, I've attached a small bouquet of evergreens which I collected from the garden to the top of the triangle.
I made the numbers and cut them out with scissors. You could save time by using a Cricut cutting machine to cut out the numbers.
I love that the paper bags are reusable year after year.
At the bottom of the staircase is a beautiful wooden triangle Christmas tree with a garland of lights and stars. I'm sorry, it seems I forgot to take a photo of it.
DIY TIP 3: The wood triangle tree is a Christmas DIY I made a few weeks ago. You can read all about it in the blog post here: Wood triangle Christmas Tree DIY.
If you prefer, you can watch the tutorial on YouTube here: Wood triangle Christmas tree - YouTube.
When I was editing these photos, it occurred to me that I forgot to take a photograph of the hall table too, oops! I remembered to take a photo of the modern rustic wreath that I made for the window frame which sits on the table. I added some dried Hydrangea flowers from my climbing hydrangea and some white wooden stars because you know there have to be stars!
Modern Rustic Christmas Kitchen
Next, we are heading into the kitchen.
I like to keep the counter space as uncluttered as possible, even at Christmastime. I bought a couple of beautiful white Poinsettias and apart from a hot cocoa bar, they are the only décor on the kitchen counters.
DIY TIP 4: I wrote a blog post on how best to set up a space-saving hot cocoa bar, which you can also see on YouTube if you'd rather watch: Space-saving cocoa bar - YouTube.
I keep the kitchen items that are used the most out. That includes my embossed Christmas rolling pin and a mixing bowl.
RECIPE TIP: I wrote a post on everything you ever wanted to know about making cookies with an embossed rolling pin. That post includes a recipe for the absolute best cookie dough for use with embossed rolling pins. The cookie dough is so delicious, I can't stop baking!
Of course, my gingerbread man spatula comes in handy, when I'm making delicious cookie dough!
I've decorated the shelves with lots of handmade paper stars and some mini real juniper trees. Here's a close-up of the shelves so that you can see how I styled them for Christmas.
Modern rustic kitchen table
We have a small sitting area in the kitchen which we use for day to day meals.
I've decorated the table with a simple table centrepiece. The peg trivet is another DIY that I made a few years ago, I love the simplicity of this coaster. I've added a small candle to the middle and made a rustic wreath from fresh evergreen cuttings.
DIY TIP 5: You can see the peg coaster DIY on my blog here.
The windowsill is always fun to decorate with modern rustic Christmas décor. I bought the modern, Scandinavian trees last year and I know I'll be using them in my décor for many Christmases to come.
In the middle of the windowsill, you can see a set of three rustic wooden houses. They each have a glass behind them to pop a tea light inside.
Do you see the tiny angel singing in front of the houses? It was given to me by my husband's Grandmother quite a few years ago. Although my husband's Grandmother is no longer with us, the little angel reminds us of her. She loved to craft and would send us lovely homemade Christmas decorations every year.
To the right of the houses are some modern rustic Christmas candle holders. They are filled with pretty dried flowers and have a candle holder on the lid.
DIY TIP 6: If you want to know how to make these candle holders, there's a tutorial on the blog here: DIY candle holder gift in a jar.
DIY TIP 7: The ornaments on the jar are another one of my DIYs. You can find out how to make these salt dough ornaments here.
Modern Rustic dining room decor
From the kitchen, we go directly into the dining room. This year I've made a simple modern rustic Christmas table centrepiece.
Christmas table decor
The centrepiece includes dried thistles, sprigs of natural evergreen, glass baubles and tea light holders in the shape of glass balls.
I filled two small jars with sand and added a twisted candle. Some Christmas Washi tape, some natural striped string and a few dried globe thistles are all the decorating these pretty little jars need.
Along the front of the footed tray, I've placed wooden letters which spell the word 'Noel'.
The best thing about creating a centrepiece on a footed tray like this one is that it can easily be removed if more space is needed on the table. For instance, on Christmas Day our table will be full of serving bowls and, of course, the centrepiece will be the turkey! If I need to, I can remove this footed tray until after the Christmas Day festivities have ended.
DIY TIP 8: The footed or pedestal tray is a popular DIY on the blog. The tray is also featured in 'Country Sampler Farmhouse Style (Christmas)', magazine this year! If you'd like to know how to make one yourself, you can find it here: How to make a farmhouse style pedestal tray.
Nativity scene
Next, I'm going to show you our Nativity. I've set up the Nativity on my little white chest of drawers this year. Sometimes, I put the Nativity under the Christmas tree but I like it here because we can all see it better.
This Nativity scene set is vintage. Until one of the pieces broke last year, we assumed the Nativity was carved from wood. From the broken pieces, we could see that it's actually made from Bakelite! Thankfully, I managed to repair the broken piece but if you look closely, you will see a fine line around Joseph's neck!
I've linked to a similar Nativity stall and figures on my shopping page.
Secretary desk Christmas styling
I've styled my lovely upcycled secretary desk with lots of stars. Have I told you I have a thing for stars!
I placed some presents around the base of the secretary desk to make it look more Christmasy. I went all eco-friendly with my wrapping this year.
CHRISTMAS WRAPPING TIP: You can find my eco-friendly wrapping ideas on the blog. If you prefer to watch a video, you can find them on YouTube here: Eco-friendly gift wrapping ideas - YouTube.
FURNITURE FLIP TIP: You can see how to paint and stencil a secretary desk here.
On the left side of the dining room is a Farmhouse style hutch. It's hard for me to get a good photo of the hutch because the table is in front. Here's a peek at how I decorated the Farmhouse dresser this year.
Modern rustic Christmas living room
Next, we'll go into the living room.
Sofa console decorating
My DIY vintage mirror got a sparkly upgrade. I added a eucalyptus wreath, some fresh evergreens and string lights.
The shelf behind the sofa is decorated with my favourite rustic wreath. I've added a few baubles and some pretty ceramic trees that I found at the pound shop this year.
Christmas coffee table decor
The centrepiece of the coffee table is a modern rustic Christmas vignette which I made for the first Sunday in Advent. I've used another real juniper tree for this coffee table display, this time in mini format. I've also used some natural bits and bobs like pine cones, moss and a large lotus seedhead to decorate the vignette. Read more about how to make this vignette in my Instagram post here.
Christmas shelf decor
I haven't done much to the shelf behind the sofa, apart to switch out one of the pictures for another one with the word 'Calm' printed on it. Of course, there had to be some stars - that goes without saying haha!
Underneath the shelf, I created a rustic looking swag. I created the swag using a small branch, some fountain lights and branches of fresh evergreen. I didn't put the fountain lights on for this photo because they look very overpowering in photos. All you would see would be a masse of white light, it's a shame because this swag looks so look so pretty when the lights are lit.
FURNITURE FLIP TIP: See how to upcycle a wood coffee table in the wood and white Farmhouse style.
A traditional German Christmas tree!
Last, but not least, the Christmas tree. We have a real tree every year and go to the Christmas tree farm to cut one down ourselves. Well, when I say we, I pick out the tree and Mr W does the cutting, that's teamwork!
We decorate the tree with baubles, together with stars, hearts and angels made of straw. The crocheted angels were another gift sent to us each Christmas by my husband's Grandmother.
I haven't decorated with red baubles for a few years but I just felt like it was time to get them back out this year.
You may notice that there are real candles on the tree - a German tradition. I have to add string lights as well, for more sparkle! The candles will be lit on the evening of Christmas Eve when we open our presents and after about an hour, they burn themselves out.
If you'd like to see how I used some tree candle holders to make some lovely handmade gifts, you can read that post here.

I really enjoyed your tour. So many beautiful great ideas. And of course the tree with real candles makes me think of my childhood in Germany. Now I'm homesick 😉 Merry Christmas
Jayne Westerholt says
Sorry, Julia, I'm sorry if I made you homesick. You have so many beautiful German ornaments too, like your German Christmas pyramid, I love that! Merry Christmas to you too!
Marty says
Oh so much to see and so pretty. You are so creative and I love how you've added so many special touches to every corner of your home. Love all the stars too and the natural elements you've used throughout the house. I loved it all, but I think my favorite is the tree. Using real candles definitely makes it special and such a reminder of trees when I was younger. Thanks for joining the tour this season, your home is so warm and inviting and filled with inspiration for everyone.
Jayne Westerholt says
Thank you, Marty! We didn't have real candles on the tree when I was growing up in the UK. My German husband introduced me to the tradition of adding candles and I'm not sure I could go without them now!
Calypso in the Country says
Wow - real candles on the tree...what a nice tradition! Your home is decorated so beautifully and I love your natural and rustic approach. It's all so warm and cozy and perfect for the holiday season! Thanks for the inspiring tour!

Jayne, what a beautiful home you have! I love your real candles on your tree. We use faux candles over here (my landlord said something about burning the apartment down--lol) but I think the real ones are so lovely. My kids are both college-age, but I have to send them advent calendars every year still. I'll have to try my hand at yours. Merry early Christmas--it's a pleasure to tour with you!
Jayne Westerholt says
Thank you for your lovely comment, Christy! We've been lighting real candles on our Christmas tree ever since our boys were little and have never once burned a house down lol! I can see your landlord's point though - he's just looking after his assets! Merry Christmas to you too!

Your home looks wonderful. I love that you've stayed away from the traditional red and gone for that more rustic look.

Thank you, Carol! Yes, I usually stay away from red because I love neutral Christmas decor but my boys love it when I add some red too!
