What is Coastal Decorating Style?
What exactly is coastal decorating style? Well, coastal decorating style captures the essence of beach side living and effortlessly blends it with interior design. It's all about creating a space that reflects the calming and refreshing vibes of the coast.
When you think of coastal decor, images of charming beachfront cottages and sun-kissed coastal landscapes might come to mind. These idyllic settings serve as the main inspiration behind this style. Coastal decor aims to recreate the feeling of walking along sandy shores, breathing in the salty air, and feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin.
One of the key aspects of coastal decor is the color palette. Think serene blues, reminiscent of ocean waves, paired with sandy neutrals that evoke visions of the beach. Soft whites mimic the fluffy clouds in the sky, while hints of green bring to mind the coastal flora. The combination of these colors creates a soothing and relaxing atmosphere, making you feel like you're on a perpetual vacation.
In coastal decor, it's all about embracing natural elements and textures. Picture weathered driftwood, woven rattan, and breezy linen fabrics. These materials add a touch of rustic charm and create a connection to the natural surroundings of the coast. Coastal decor also incorporates elements like seashells, starfish, and faux coral, adding a whimsical touch and further emphasizing the beach-inspired aesthetic.
So, if you're yearning for the tranquil and laid-back ambiance of the coast, the coastal decorating style might be the perfect choice for you.
How to decorate in a coastal theme
Now that we have a good grasp of coastal decorating style, let's take a look at how to decorate with a coastal theme.
Coastal colors for your home
Shades of blue
One of the first steps in achieving that coastal vibe is choosing the right color scheme. The colors you select will set the tone for your entire coastal-inspired space.
To truly capture the essence of coastal aesthetics, you should opt for a color palette that reflects the tranquil beauty of the seaside. Blues are a staple in coastal decor, symbolizing the vastness of the ocean. From deep navy to soft sky blue, incorporating various shades of blue throughout your space will create a sense of calm and serenity.
You can easily incorporate navy blue by adding accessories like candles to your coastal decor.
Coastal blue and white
In addition to blues, whites play a crucial role in coastal decor. They represent the purity of sea foam and the crispness of a bright, sunny day by the shore. Whites bring a light and airy feel to the space, making it appear more spacious and inviting. You could use white as the base color for walls, furniture, and larger decor pieces.
Sandy neutrals
To add warmth and depth to your coastal-themed space, incorporate natural tones. Sandy neutrals, warm beiges, and driftwood-inspired browns evoke the feeling of walking along a sandy beach. These earthy tones create a sense of grounding and harmony, seamlessly integrating with the coastal color scheme.
When incorporating these colors into your coastal decor, think beyond just paint and wall coverings. Use them in your choice of furniture upholstery, throw pillows, rugs, curtains, and decorative accents. By harmoniously blending blues, whites, and natural tones, you'll create a space that exudes coastal charm and transports you to a coastal cottage paradise.
Remember, it's not about rigidly sticking to specific shades or ratios; it's about capturing the essence and feeling of coastal living through your color choices. Let the colors of the sea, sand, and sky guide you as you bring your coastal vision to life in your home.
What Style Goes With Coastal?
Coastal style is incredibly versatile and can harmoniously blend with various other design styles, allowing you to create a space that truly reflects your personal taste. By incorporating coastal elements into different design styles, you can achieve a unique and captivating look that captures the essence of both worlds.
Coastal farmhouse
One popular combination is coastal farmhouse. This style merges the casual and relaxed coastal vibe with the rustic and charming elements of farmhouse decor. Think whitewashed wood, vintage accents, and cozy textiles paired with coastal colors and nautical elements. The result is a warm and inviting space that feels both coastal and country-inspired.
Coastal contemporary
If you prefer a more contemporary approach, coastal contemporary might be the perfect choice. This style embraces clean lines, minimalism, and a focus on natural light. By incorporating coastal colors and textures into a contemporary design, you can achieve a fresh and airy ambiance that seamlessly blends modern sophistication with coastal serenity.
Coastal bohemian style
For those with a bohemian flair, coastal bohemian style offers a whimsical and eclectic take on coastal decor. This style combines the carefree and artistic elements of bohemian design with coastal influences. Mix vibrant textiles, rattan furniture, and unique found objects with coastal colors and beach-inspired accessories. The result is a space that exudes a laid-back, boho-chic vibe with a coastal twist.
The key to successfully combining coastal style with other design styles is finding the right balance. Choose elements from both styles that complement each other and create a cohesive look. Don't be afraid to experiment and mix different textures, patterns, and materials to achieve a truly personalized space that reflects your individual style.
Whether you lean towards the farmhouse, contemporary, bohemian, or any other design style, coastal elements can enhance the overall aesthetic and infuse your space with a sense of seaside tranquility.

I love how you've made coastal style look cozy! I've tried that and it just doesn't work well at my home. Your living area with the cabinet in the corner has to be my favorite spot. Oh wait, no, it's the desk! I'd love spending my day in either of those spaces. I can't imagine being surrounded with so much live plants. Mine are fake and let's just say, not cozy. Loved your tour and your ideas and tips were perfect. Happy summer!
Jayne Westerholt says
Thanks Cindy! Yes, the desk is a favorite spot of mine too. As for the plants, I use fake ones too sometimes but prefer to use fresh whenever possible - I just love the smell haha!
