Beach-Themed Table Decor
To capture the essence of the beach, I've started with the foundation of our tablescape—the tablecloth.
I've chosen a lovely sand-colored, checked tablecloth. The subtle color and pattern complement the overall coastal theme. You can find a similar tablecloth here.
TIP: Embrace a soft color palette inspired by the beach, using shades of white, cream, and pastel blues to create a serene and breezy atmosphere.
Nautical Table Settings
As we move on to the place settings, you can see that I've created a blend of vintage and modern elements in my tablescape. To recreate it, start with woven placements for a reedy seashore texture. Then, layer vintage white plates atop more modern white or blue-patterned plates. Mine have a sandy-colored rim and are from Denby Pottery's 'Linen' range. This combination adds depth and character to your coastal dining table.
Coastal Centerpiece Ideas
For this tablescape, I've crafted a breezy centerpiece using natural elements. Begin with a shallow round basket made from natural rope, which serves as the base. Place a wreath from vines like this one or grass reeds inside the basket. Place a wispy grass plant in the center of the wreath, bringing a touch of organic elegance to the table.
Seashell Table Decorations
No beach-inspired summer tablescape would be complete without seashells. Sprinkle large and small artificial starfish decor and seashells around the table to add a whimsical touch. These days, you can buy faux shells that look just like the real thing, so if you don't live near the coast, you can still get the beachy vibe for your tablescapes.
Shell-ebrate Responsibly: Crabby Homes are off Limits!
Remember, when collecting seashells from the beach for your coastal decor, avoid picking up large or small shells that can serve as homes for hermit crabs. These shells are in high demand and essential for the survival of our crab friends. Let's respect their habitat and ensure they have a safe place to call home along the shoreline.
Ocean-Inspired Dining Table Decor
Next, you can start introducing some beautiful decorative elements. Begin by placing two flowerpots containing white flowers (I've used Dahlias) on either side of the centerpiece. The soft, creamy white hue creates a refreshing contrast against the natural elements and vibrant green foliage.
Colors and textures for Coastal Tablescapes
Always keep the overall ambiance of your coastal dining room in mind and pay attention to the details. The little touches can make all the difference in creating an inviting and relaxed beach vibe. For the glassware, opt for blue-shaded water glasses and clear stemware. Place the water glasses on small, round coasters to protect your table and add a rustic touch. This summer, I found these coasters with frayed edges and knew they would be the perfect addition to my ocean-inspired table décor.
Coastal Table Linens
Your choice of linens can significantly impact the overall aesthetic of your beach-inspired summer tablescape. For a setting like this, I like using crisp white napkins held together with the DIY napkin rings I shared in an earlier blog post. The napkin rings are crafted using natural materials like jute, and you can easily swap the flowers for seashells, which will tie in perfectly with the coastal theme. The white napkins provide a clean and fresh backdrop, allowing the other elements to shine and take center stage.
TIP: Learn how to make napkins using fabric remnants
Use sea green candles as table Accents
For my beach-inspired summer tablescape, I've used small clear glass candle holders containing tall candles in a beautiful sea green/blue color. The candles are placed intermittently along the dining table.
Small rattan basket candleholders filled with chunky soy votive candles are great options for outdoor tablescapes. Pillar candles last for ages and rattan basket weave is the perfect choice for beach-inspired table décor.
See my candlemaking post to find out why I avoid using paraffin-based candles at home.
Beach-inspired Fresh Green Foliage
To bring a vibrant touch of nature to your beach-style table decor, weave fresh green foliage in and out of the items placed along the center of the table. You can use palm leaves, ferns, or even eucalyptus branches to add a lush and organic feel to your beachy tablescape decor.
Versatile Summer Indoor and Outdoor Dining
As I mentioned earlier in this post, one of the best aspects of this beach-inspired summer tablescape is its versatility. You can seamlessly transition it between indoor and outdoor dining settings, allowing you to embrace the coastal vibe wherever you decide to gather.
If you have a spacious backyard or a cozy balcony, consider setting up this tablescape amidst the beauty of nature. The plants used in the tablescape can also be repurposed for your garden or displayed on your balcony once they are no longer needed for the tablescape.
Ideas for beach-inspired decorating
Beachy Decor Ideas for Dining Room Table: Creating a beachy atmosphere for your dining room table goes beyond the tablescape itself. Here are a few additional decor ideas to enhance the coastal aesthetic in your dining space:
- Dining Chairs: Opt for dining chairs with light-colored upholstery in natural tones or with rattan detailing to emulate the relaxed vibe of coastal living. Consider adding seat cushions in soft pastel shades to evoke the soothing colors of the beach.
- Dining Room Lighting: For your dining room, choose pendant lights that exude a coastal charm. Look for fixtures with nautical-inspired elements like ropes, weathered metal finishes, or even shell-shaped shades. These lighting choices will further enhance the beachy ambiance. You can find similar dining table pendant lights to mine and lots more gorgeous pendant lighting ideas in this post.
- Dining Room Decor Ideas: Extend the coastal theme throughout your dining room with carefully curated decor. Hang beach-inspired artwork, display seashells in glass jars, or incorporate elements like driftwood or coral as decorative accents. I put together this popular beach-inspired centerpiece for one of my summer decorating posts.
