Incentive for making a natural degreaser

When you start making your own natural products, it’s always a bit hit and miss I find.  You do your research,  source the products, take the time to whip up your super healthy ‘miracle potion’ and then, if it doesn’t quite work out like you hoped, you either get disheartened and give up or it’s back to the drawing board to start all over again.

I made this natural degreaser for my son, who likes to service his motorbike himself.  After stripping the engine and changing the oil etc., he found cleaning his greasy and oily hands a challenge.  The commercial hand cleaner he had been using was leaving the skin on his hands dry and irritated and often his hands still looked dirty even though he had given them a good scrub.  I decided it was time to try something new.

The next time he came in with his hands covered in oil, I just pointed him towards the glass of natural degreaser I had left out for him, walked away and waited for the verdict!

A natural degreaser that works!

A few minutes later, he emerged with a smile on his face and asked me where I had bought the wonderful new hand cleaner.  He said it worked even better than the industrial version he had previously used and it removed the oil and grease with much less effort.  His hands weren’t at all red or irritated as they usually were after cleaning.  Oh, and he liked the lemony smell!

I was so thrilled that it had worked so well and I knew immediately that this was something I had to share.

Do you know someone who loves messing about with cars and engines?  Are they fed up with dry and irritated hands after cleaning too? If so, then this natural homemade degreaser might also be perfect for them. It’s so super easy to make, why not give it a try?

★Tip★:: I love to make up gift bags for birthdays and special occasions and this is definitely a great addition to a ‘Wellness’, ‘Mechanics’ or ‘Gardener’s ‘ gift set.

  • 2tbl Honey
  • ½ cup coconut oil |   USA   |   D   |   UK   |
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 10 drops lemon essential oil (See *below)

★Tip★: Essential oils should almost always be diluted with other carrier oils to avoid skin irritation.

Essential oils safety

I recommend doing a skin test before using any new products.  Simply rub a small amount of the finished product onto the inside of your wrist and watch for any irritation or redness.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please check with your health practitioner whether it is safe for you to use essential oils.

For more information about using essential oils safely, I recommend you take a look at this safety page from Organic Aromas:

Method

  1. If your coconut oil is solid, melt it first in a small saucepan and allow it to cool down a little.  Add the rest of the ingredients and mix thoroughly to combine.
