These DIY Hydrangea and corn husk Autumn wreaths can be used indoors or outdoors. Hang them on your walls or hang them on your front door and let them be the first thing your guests see as they enter your home.
An Easy Craft for Kids
Autumn wreaths are an easy Autumn craft for kids or for Mums and Dads who think they're rubbish at crafts! These really are the most simple wreaths to make. Think of them as 'The lazy girls guide to Autumn wreaths'. No, I'm saying you're lazy, I'm just saying that home styling for each season doesn't always have to be a mammoth task to be dreaded.
If you are looking to occupy crafty kids during the Autumn break or on rainy weekends, then this will be the perfect craft for them. It's easy, won't test their attention span and they can decorate it to their little heart's content!

Harvest Those Natural Goodies
I live in the countryside and at this time of year, the cornfields are being harvested. After the harvest, the ground is full of stray corn leaves which didn't make it into the harvester. You know me, I can't resist an opportunity like this. Some of those stray leaves make their way into the collection of natural goodies I bring back from my beautiful Autumn walks with Brilli.
Autumn Wreaths with corn husk leaves
For these simple Autumn wreaths, I use a metal wire ring as a base. These wreaths also look stunning on smaller rings and you could even make three in varying sizes and hang them together for a really stunning look.
Time needed: 15 minutes
HOW TO MAKE A SIMPLE CORN HUSK WREATH
- Materials needed:
Metal wreath ring
Florist wire
Wire cutters
Glue gun
Glue sticks
Dried corn husk leaves
Dried Autumn leaves - Attach the corn husk leaves
Take a small bundle of dried corn husk leaves and attach them to the wire ring with florists wire.
- Overlap each bundle
Continue to do this all the way around, making sure to slightly overlap each bundle so you cover up the wire.
- Hide the wire
If you can still see the wire once you're finished, use the glue gun to and more corn husk leaves to cover it up.
- Attach the Autumn leaves
Glue some colourful dried Autumn leaves around the inside of the wreath to finish.
- Add some Ribbon
Now all you need to do is attach some ribbon, burlap or string to your Autumn wreath and hang it up.
Autumn Wreaths with Dried Hydrangea flowers
Time needed: 15 minutes
These flowers are from my Annabelle Hydrangeas. During Summer, these Hydrangeas are an explosion of huge creamy white flowers. We have one right outside our front door and it's become one of Brilli's favourite places to cool off in Summer because it's on the shady side of our house.
Cut The Blooms To Size
When I harvested the Hydrangeas for these Autumn wreaths, I tried to pick blooms which were roughly the same size although, separating the larger blooms a little, to make them smaller would also work.
Leave the stems attached
When cutting the dried blooms, make sure to leave about 10cm to 15cm of the stems attached because these are what we will use to tie the Hydrangea blooms to the straw wreath.
Materials needed:
- Straw Wreath
- Dried Hydrangea Flowers
- Florist wire
- Wire cutters
- Ribbon - I love this one but you can find loads more here.
- First, wrap the florist wire around the straw wreath and twist the ends together to secure it in place.
- Collect a small bundle of Hydrangea flowers and start tying them to the straw wreath. I cover the whole of the wreath with one bundle.
- Continue to cover the straw wreath working around the circle, overlapping the flowers slightly until the wreath is completely covered.
- Add some ribbon for hanging and your Autumn Wreath is finished!
Tips for avoiding a mess!
TIP #1: The dried Hydrangea flowers are quite fragile and you will have quite a bit of mess after making this wreath. I spread out a cotton sheet which I normally use for painting projects onto my work surface which made the clean-up easy. I just bundled the sheet up afterwards and took it outside to shake it off.
TIP #2: The dried Hydrangea Flowers will fall out of the wreath now and again. If you are hanging this inside, make sure it's not in a high traffic area where it will be bumped around too much.
2 Simple Autumn Wreaths for Inside or Out
Mostly it's the simple things in life that help us appreciate the seasons and the abundance of beauty all around us.
My corn husk wreath is hanging in my office. If you've been following my office makeover progress, you'll know that I haven't had a chance to decorate the walls yet. This simple Autumn wreath is perfect for the bare wall opposite the new shelves – at least until I start decorating for Christmas anyway 😉
I used contrasting ribbons to decorate the Hydrangea wreath and tied it to my front door. As long as we don't have many high winds, it should last until my Christmas wreath replaces it at the end of November.
