How to welcome Autumn into your home

Even if like me, you're clinging on to the last remnants of summer and still enjoying the mild sunny weather at the beginning of September, in the back of your mind, you know that all that could change at any minute. When the mist starts settling over the landscape in the mornings and your daily walk includes wading through mounds of fallen leaves in a kaleidoscope of colours, you know it's time to start preparing to welcome autumn into your home.

Create a haven and refuge from the world outside the door! I'll show you how to welcome autumn into your home and transform it into a stylish, cosy and inviting space. #homedecor #autumndecor #autumnstyling #homestyling #autumnhomestyling #falldecor #fallhomedecor

For me, there's nothing better than walking into a home and instantly feeling a sense of warmth and comfort. If it feels like your home is wrapping its arms around you in a big bear hug then you've certainly done a fantastic job of creating a haven and refuge from the world outside the door!

Autumn is the perfect season for bringing out that warmth and comfort and creating a cosy and inviting space. If you don't know where to start, I've put together a few of my favourite ways of welcoming Autumn into my own home and maybe they'll inspire you to inject some Autumn vibes into yours too.

How to welcome autumn into your home

Start at the door

A welcome mat is the first thing any visitor sees when they approach your home. If yours is looking a bit shabby, why not replace it with one of these lovelies. It will also serve as a reminder for you on your return home, that you are about to enter a beautiful, stress-free zone!

Add some fragrance with Infusers

Welcome Autumn into your home with Infusers. If like us, you have a dog and you find yourself being a bit paranoid about your guests' first impression being that wonderfully fragrant perfume called 'whiff of dog' my best tip (apart from keeping the dog bed clean and fresh of course) would be to place an infuser in your hallway. I've lost count of the number of times a visitor has asked me “oooh, what's that lovely smell?” and you can bet my answer was never “The dog!”. The perfume in Infusers lasts for such a long time too so be sure to get something that you will be able to live with for months. I've had mine for almost a year and it's nearly empty now. I'm on the search for a new one and I'm sharing my favourite finds with you below.

On the table

Candles

Together with Infusers, candles are one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways of adding seasonal impact. There's something about that soft flickering candlelight that instantly makes you feel all warm and cosy on the inside too.

You can stock up on fragrances like 'Pumpkin spice' or 'Apple and cinnamon' if you like but to be honest I just buy anything that takes my fancy. Just the sight of candles being lit puts smiles on my boys' faces because to them, it suggests the cosy glow of early sunsets and evenings gathered around the fireplace – or in other words, once we start lighting candles, Christmas is not far down the road!

Here are some best smelling fragrances to try:

Mugs

When you think of Autumn, don't you just picture mugs full of steaming hot cocoa? You'll need a vessel for all that smooth, creamy deliciousness and I've found some gorgeous autumnal versions below that will do the job nicely!

Bring on the blanket!

Don't tell me you didn't see this coming! Everyone knows that layering up with cosy textiles is the number one best way to welcome Autumn into your home. There are so many wonderful styles to choose from to suit any budget but with all that choice out there, how do you know what's going to work with your own style? Well, I have the tip of all tips for you as far as finding out what works and what doesn't. Take a look at my post 'A mood board saves you time and money | How to make one' if you'd rather get it right the first time around and avoid wasting time returning all those unsuitable items.

I like to store some extra blankets in baskets next to the sofa so that they are close to hand on chilly evenings.

Sheepskins

Another favourite of mine and you'll see these making their way into my Instagram feed around this time of year. Just because I already own some though doesn't mean I can't have more! The thing is, they really are so versatile. You can use them outside when you want to snuggle up and watch the stars and inside on the sofa or footstool. I usually drape one over my office chair in winter for extra warmth and have even been known to slip one under my desk to warm my feet!

Cushion up!

Time to get tactile and surround yourself with things you want to touch. These are a few of the cushions I'm loving right now which are guaranteed to add that extra snuggle factor to your couch and make your living space more inviting.

Prints and Postcards

This is another easy and relatively cheap way to welcome Autumn into your home. I like to swap out some of my prints or add some pretty postcards suitable for the season.

Removable wallpapers

These removable wallpapers are something I recently found by accident whilst I was looking for something else – isn't that always the way! There are so many wonderful designs available and there's something for everyone here no matter what your taste. This could be a fantastic solution for you if you're renting too because you can simply peel it off when you move. You can even fake a woodpile if you've been hankering after one but don't have space.

Pine cones

Dress up your home with seasonal finds and crafts, collect some pine cones and display them in wire baskets on the hearth – did you know they make great firelighters too? If you can't collect them yourself or if pine trees don't grow where you live, you can buy them cheaply enough online here.

Woodpile

One of the best ways of showing you are ready to welcome autumn into your home is by placing a basket of logs next to the fire. Woodpiles are right on trend right now and even if you don't have a fireplace a basket of autumn logs is a really cheap way of adding texture and creating a rustic feel in your home.

Well, like I said, this is how I like to welcome Autumn into my home but it's important that you find your own autumnal style and make it work for your home. I hope you find this helpful and that it inspires you when you're transitioning your décor and getting your home ready for the spectacular season to come.
